Wanted: Crochet/Knitting Needles and Wool

Hello I am very interested in starting to make little crochet items for friends who are having babies, as well as a large throw for my lounge. I am a beginner and am loath to start spending too much money on something I might not be great at. If anyone has some spare/old needles or hooks, and some wool to get me started that would be really helpful. Thank you Courtney
