Why are items which are no longer available ‘greyed out’ rather than being removed from the listings.?

maybe to give someone a chance to re list the item before they remove it!

THere is not, I understand, the facility to remove/delete something which is no longer available or have, indeed, been collected but for some reason shows "Not Taken" when it has been taken.... I've got quite a few of those on my site and its annoying that I'm unable to "tidy" the site. Grrrrrr
