I think this is a Model A101 side loading chrome-plated toaster manufactured by Kenwood in the 1930s or 1940s. Perfect working order.

Yes - it makes toast perfectly. You have to watch it though, no automatic pop up or anything when toast is done! I used it mostly as a sort of kitchen ornament, but it works fine.
