All the details

I lived in Bohicon in R.P. Benin, W. Africa, 1980-1981 and bought this tablecloth and napkins set from the nearby Royal Palaces of Abomey, where it had been handwoven and decorated by local people. The symbols on the fabric are the same as those used at the Royal Palaces historically and represent such things as a broom, a goblet and a pineapple, for example. The tablecloth is very large in size, measuring approximately 1 metre and 50 cms in width and 2 metres and 31 cm in length. The napkins measure 31cm x 34cm approximately. You could sew them all together to make a tablecloth - that's an option. It could be about 4' x 3' if you had it 4 napkins by 3 napkins. Or a runner measuring 2' x 6' if you had 2 napkins x 6 napkins. The tablecloth could even be used as a throw. The base fabric is pale yellow/cornish cream coloured, handwoven by the locals in Abomey, and this fabric has then been decorated by hand with black and orange threads in the design shown in the photographs. There are a few snags which could be pulled back in with a needle. Obviously these are hand woven and hand decorated so have imperfections that you wouldn't find in something from John Lewis for example! This adds to their appeal. You won't find anyone else with these!
